American Legion Scrapbook (1936-1939)

The American Legion Post was instrumental in converting the Ambassador Hotel’s bankrupt country club into the public Cheviot Hills Recreation Center and Rancho Park Golf Course.  It also fought to add decades of service to the Santa Monica Air Line, with post historian Bernard Geissler writing, “The Santa Monica Air-Line has served this community for many years and to abandon this service would mean considerable inconvenience of the residents, including several members of the Post.”  He also wrote of the post’s origin:

Cheviot Hills Post #501 of The American Legion . . . was fathered by Comrades Fowler D. Jones, Bernard Geissler and Hal Hughes. It was organized on April 30th, 1934 at the Palomar Club, 3084 Motor Avenue, Cheviot Hills.

This Post was organized in virgin territory. Dedicated to the ideals and principles of the National American Legion and SERVICE to the Post’s community, comprising Monte Mar Vista, Cheviot Hills, and Country Club Highlands.
